StarCrossed: Starting from the End and Going from There
Full Moons are known for stirring emotions, sparking intuition, and boosting energy—it’s like nature’s way of hitting the reset button.
StarCrossed follows a hobby that keeps my passion for reading and research alive—astrology and astronomy. My love for the Universe goes beyond the spiritual and includes the scientific wonders of space.
The start of a new year is such a special time—a chance for fresh starts, setting intentions, and dreaming about what’s ahead. For those who practice lunar magic, this often aligns with New Moons, which symbolize new beginnings and manifestation. Most years, a New Moon kicks off the calendar year, setting the tone for the months ahead. But every once in a while, we get something a little different: a Full Moon to light up the start of the year.
That’s exactly what happened after December 2024’s twin New Moons, with the Black New Moon in Capricorn quietly closing out the month. Then, last January 13, we were greeted by the Full Moon in Cancer, an intense and powerful energy to kick off the year.
Understanding the Power of Full Moons
Before we dive into why starting the new year with a Full Moon is so special, let’s take a moment to appreciate every Full Moon's magic. These lunar events are known for stirring emotions, sparking intuition, and boosting energy—it’s like nature’s way of hitting the reset button.
Throughout history, many cultures have given names to each month’s Full Moon, tying them to the rhythms of nature. For instance, January’s Full Moon is often called the "Wolf Moon," inspired by the howling of wolves in the stillness of winter. And then there’s the "Strawberry Moon" in June, perfectly timed with strawberry season in some parts of the world. These names remind us of the deep connection between the moon and the cycles of life.
Full Moons are also seen as a time to let go—shedding old energy just as the moon shines its light on the world. It’s the perfect moment to release what no longer serves us and make room for fresh, positive energy.
Starting the year with a Full Moon feels extra special, doesn’t it? It’s like the universe is giving us a little nudge to reflect on our wins, let go of the past, and set some meaningful intentions for the year ahead. A Full Moon at the beginning of the year is a beautiful reminder that every ending leads to a new beginning, full of possibility.
Harnessing the Energy of the Full Moon in Cancer
To get the most out of the Full Moon in Cancer, why not switch things up from the usual New Year's resolutions? Instead of focusing on goals and achievements, take this time to tune into your emotions, relationships, and home life.
Cancer, being a water sign, is all about emotional depth and nurturing energy. During this Full Moon, it's a great moment to check in with yourself and the people closest to you. How have your relationships grown or changed over the past year? Take a little time to reflect, strengthen those bonds, and let go of any negative patterns that might be getting in the way of deeper connections.
Save your manifestation rituals for the New Moon in Aquarius on January 29. For now, focus on setting intentions that bring balance and harmony to your emotional and home life for the year ahead.
And since Cancer loves all things home and family, this is a perfect time to create a fresh start in your space. Declutter, cleanse, and make your home feel like the comforting sanctuary it’s meant to be. As you clear out the physical clutter, take a moment to release emotional baggage too—let go of those old memories or attachments that might be holding you back. Embrace the nurturing energy of this Full Moon and permit yourself to focus on what truly feels good.
Observing the Planetary Parade
If your astrology interest crosses over into astronomy, you may want to know that NASA is reporting that a "planetary parade" will be visible in the sky this month. Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn are lighting up January nights this 2025. Venus and Saturn will come together in the southwestern sky just after sunset, while Jupiter shines brightly overhead all night. Mars, with its striking red hue, will rise in the eastern sky later in the evenings.
At the start of 2025, with the Moon appearing in its crescent form, the sight of Venus sitting beside it was just the little bit of magic I needed to start the year right. Venus doesn't disappoint for the rest of January 2025 and has been in a slow dance with Saturn since January 10. Venus is easily visible during bright twilight, but Saturn does not appear until the sky darkens. Last Friday and Saturday, Venus and Saturn appeared super close in the southwestern sky in a rare planetary conjunction.
Reflecting on the Venus and Saturn Conjunction
A Venus-Saturn conjunction is a time when love and relationships may feel a bit more serious or challenging. It’s all about slowing down, focusing on what really matters, and building solid, long-lasting connections. This energy also encourages commitment and responsibility in relationships, helping us strengthen those bonds that truly matter. Coming after the Full Moon in Cancer, this conjunction highlights the importance of communication, compatibility, openness, and vulnerability. It’s a chance to reflect on how these qualities show up in your closest relationships and how you can create even deeper, more meaningful connections.
Starting from the End to a New Beginning
January 13's Full Moon in Cancer felt like a much-needed nudge for me—a reminder that it was time to finally face what I’d been putting off for way too long.
I’m always talking about letting go, embracing vulnerability, and staying open to change, but honestly, my actions haven’t always matched my words. Last Monday, I decided to do something about it. I took the night to reflect, show gratitude for everything the past had given me, and finally let go of what I’d been holding onto. It wasn’t easy to pry my fingers off of what was left of the past, but it felt so freeing. How about you? How’s 2025 treating you so far?
