SpellWork is a direct reflection of my witchcraft practice. I’m not a traditional witch, and belong to no coven—think of me as a lone hedge witch.
It is Thursday as I’m writing this, and I am excited! On Sunday, when you will probably be reading this, the night sky will feature a new moon. And unlike the previous new moon and full moon, I actually have an altar set up for the occasion.
What’s the Significance of a New Moon?
During a new moon, the sun and the moon are always aligned. Astrologers will say that this means that masculine and feminine energies are strong and that it’s a great time for positive change.
To me, a Cancerian through and through — Cancer is in my sun and moon, and I also have a Cancer stellium in my chart — the moon has always felt like a familiar friend, almost a reflection of myself. And during the new moon, I find strength in the idea of not seeing my reflection in the sky.
It’s a time for my shadow to come out — that part of me that will get a bad reaction out of certain people. My instinct says that the new moon is ideal for banishment spells and saying goodbye to friends and ideas that no longer serve who you are in the moment. But the new moon is also the beginning of a cycle. So I feel like it’s also a great time for attraction spells, setting intentions, starting projects.
This Sunday, I’m finally speaking in the voice that I’ve silenced all these years. I’m claiming who I am and I’m going to be unapologetic about it.
How Do You Set Your Intentions and Banish What No Longer Serves You?
I’m just going to follow my intuition here and create my own rituals. But here are some great ideas to get you started:
Lighting a candle and ringing a bell to begin
Smudging to purify your crystals, cards, and space to banish negative energy
Meditating to clear your head, then thinking of what you want to attract and banish
Writing your intentions in a journal, and then writing what you want to banish on a piece of paper to burn
Pulling tarot or oracle cards intuitively to let your shadow speak to you
Choosing crystals to keep close to your body for the month
Thanking yourself and your connection to the moon before blowing the candle out and ringing the bell again
Spending the rest of the night with essential oils diffusing and a cup of tea to nurse
Let me know if you have any other unique ideas to add to these.
What Does Spring Bring With It?
My personal answer to this is restoration and change! I got sick earlier this year and all of the great changes I made to get healthier fell by the wayside. I’m looking to reboot and start anew this season. What about you?
